But atteint !!! Bien arrivés aux Orcades !!

Les voyages forment la jeunesse... Charline et Julia le savent bien, qui quittent l'hôtel ce matin, pour se rendre au château de Mey - résidence de la reine mère -  qui avait acheté cette demeure en 1952 et y a souvent demeuré jusqu'à sa mort en 2002.
Travels are formative for the young people... Charline & Julia know that very well already, as they are leaving the hotel to go to Mey castle - the residence that the Queenmother bought in 1952 and where she used to come until her death 2002.

Visite fort intéressante pour les observateurs avertis de la famille royale !
Very interesting visit indeed for skilled observers of the Royal Family, as we are !

Le prince Charles sera là lundi... Dommage pour lui de manquer une rencontre avec son conscrit français que je suis.
Prince Charles will be here next Monday... Sorry for Him, that he'll miss an encounter with Me - a Frenchman the same age as He is !

Et puis Charline et Julia ont pu y traire les vaches.. 
And both girls could train milking a cow there !!

C'est un beau catamaran qui a avalé nos voitures et leurs occupants, pour nous amener sur l'archipel des Orcades - que nous avons atteint vers 14h.
Then a beautiful catamaran swallowed up our cars and their passengers, to bring us to the Orkneys - that we reached at approx. 2pm.

Notre premier contact avec les lieux a été un peu militaire - avec beaucoup d'ouvrages de défense construits par les Anglais pendant la 2ème guerre mondiale.
At once we felt the strategic importance of the site - with many defensive buildings originating from WWII.
Les Orcades délimitent une sorte de mer intérieure trés abritée dans laquelle les Anglais abritaient leur marine. Churchill a donc décidé de relier certaines des îles par des digues - pour renforcer encore la défense naturelle.
The Okrney islands build kind of an inner very well protected sea, in which the English would  shelter the Royal Navy during both world wars. Churchill decided to link some of the islands with dykes or causeways that even reinforced the natural protection.

Un peu plus au Nord, sur l'île principale, nous avons visité une chapelle dédiée aux prisonniers de guerre italiens amenés ici précisément pour construire ces digues.
A little further North, on Mainland, we visited a chapel dedicated to the Italian war prisoners that were sent here precisely to help building these causeways.

Nous avons pris possession de la maison récente que nous avons louée pour 6 jours à Kirkwall (9000 habitants) - la capitale des Orcades. Maison superbe et plus que confortable.
La fin de l'après- midi à été consacrée aux courses au supermarché du coin, et à une visite à l'office du Tourisme, pour établir en détail notre plan d'actvités de la semaine... compte tenu également de la météo qui s'annonce... on verra bien !!
We took over the recent house that we rented for 6 days in Kirkwall (9000 inhabitants and capital of the Orkneys). Fantastic and very comfortable house.

We spent the rest of the afternoon shopping at the Tesco supermarket, and visiting the Visitor Information Center, to establish in more details the program of our upcoming week - also taking the weather forecasts into account... It sounds well !!! More to come !!!
